Typhoon season

July is the beginning of typhoon season, a pretty unstable and an incredibly hot period of time, weather-wise, on the Pacific coast of Japan. Other than stupid amounts of humidity, this environmental instability leads to one thing – great waves for surfing!

Misato Okada showed me a cool surfing point in Yoshida, the next town over from mine that is good at this time of year, mostly because they don’t charge $15 for parking, as the other beaches do during the summer months.

As of the 16th July, there has only been three days that I haven’t gone surfing this month. And although what I do is more like “paddling and trying to ride a wave” as opposed to really surfing, it’s great to be out there. My tan is in top form and I’m learning a lot of what not to do when the water gets pretty rough…the ocean is a powerful thing!
